7/12/2011 9:39:00 AMI recognize the area you're fishing in the picture to the left. Directly behind you I caught a 4-3 on a floating Rapala last year during spawn. She was on the shallow rocks close to the little point. To your left there is a 5 to 8 ft shallow flat. We've caught many bass on the flat, and on the break where it drops off into deeper water on the main lake side. Drop shots, weightless Sencos and crankbaits were normally used. Although a fishing buddy and his son had a memorable day on that flat with topwater. The rockbass can be a pain, but all you can do is wade through them. One time I caught 4 rockbass on 4 casts to the same spot. On the 5th cast I caught a 3-12 smallie. And the reason is just what you said. The rockbass are so aggressive many times they get to the bait before smallmouth can.
