Our fishing on Potholes this past week has been good, bad, and fantastic: all within the same morning. Some mornings it is slow as paint drying followed by mid-day doubles with Walleye to 10 lbs., Trout to 4lbs., and a pile of smallmouth up to 5lbs! We have been scratching out a nice mess of fish everyday, some mornings like clockwork with a steady bite. Some 1/2 day trips have stretched to 8 and 9 hour outings to get a nice stringer. Fishing the same areas, same weather, same techniques, fish are still there but will not touch anything. Come back two hours later fish on! Land the fish and there are dozens of perch from 1/2'' to 7" being spit out of the Walleye! Each ball of bait fish on the Humminbird has two Walleye on each side of it. It is a wonder they will bite anything with all the food available! Many of the big Walleye are caught on crankbaits but the worm harnesses have produced more fish as well as the extras- trout, smallies, cats, a few perch and a couple of really nice Crappie.
Catching quality Walleye to 29" in water from 5 to 50ft deep. Monday morning the Walleye bite was tough but we stayed busy with 4 trout to 4Lbs., 8 smallmouth to 5 Lbs, a 30Lb Carp hooked in the dorsal fin, a 2 Lb. bullhead, then it was 4 17-20" Walleye, followed by a great run of big Walleye to 10 Lbs. Released 5 over 22". Not a bad day for just two of us in the boat!

I'll bet that carp hooked in the dorsal fin was a fight!

5lb smallies this time of year is quite an accomplishment. Do you find the big smallies mixed in with the walleye this time of year? I know they will do that on Banks.

We have been catching a few MONSTER smallmouth while trolling for the Walleye, and some nice Rainbows as well.
