Headed out fishing after dinner to enjoy the warm evening we had. Fished along the Fremont side of the Ship Canal for about an hour and a half. Caught two smallies in the 11-12" range, and lost a slightly larger one right at my feet as I attempted to land it. They put up quite a fight for such little guys. The one I lost jumped fully out of the water twice before it threw the hook. Had success with a chartreuse crankbait and inline spinner, and had one chase a bleeding copper Rapala, so bright colors seemed to be the order of the day.

At one point I had a tiny sculpin repeatedly darting out from under a rock to chase the lure with each cast I made. It cracked me up that this little guy was contemplating attacking a lure that was bigger than it was. Good comic relief.

All in all, I had great fun for a quick after dinner trip.

Oh man! I thought about calling you, but I thought it might be too short a trip to be worth your while! Darn it.

Is the fish in the pic taken on a hitch rack of some sort? Did you eat it. Never tried Smallmouth bass before.

Motoboat - it was just a park bench right by the water. I just took a quick picture of it, and released it.

I have eaten Smallmouth before, filleted and fried up in cornmeal, and it was quite tasty.
