Finally made a trip to Amber this year, and was blessed with September-like weather, which made for an enjoyable few hours of fishing. I only fished from 1:30-3:30pm, and upon arriving noticed some fish rising in the deep water directly out in front of the launch. I resisted the temptation to target those risers and headed to the far south end shallows, which as it turned out, was a pretty good decision. While I do not believe there was a large concentration of fish(numbers wise) on that end, the fish that were there were all good sized- between myself and in talking with another guy on that end who was fishing near me, all the fish were 19+ inches and difficult to land given the weed growth. Largest fish hooked (and lost) was 22-23" but there were good numbers of fish in the 19-20" range. Fishing under an indicator (bloodworms, leeches, etc.) was fruitless, so I changed that out and tied on a bh halfback nymph off a 12 ft leader and began working the shorelines. 1st cast produced a nice 19inch bow I managed to land with a lot of luck and a bit of skill given the weed growth and very shallow water. In pumping his stomach, it revealed that water boatman was the menu item of choice, which explains why the halfback nymph was working as well as it did. I overheard another person on that end say that snails were also working. Very little going on in terms of hatches- the odd chironomid here and there would randomly appear, but there were fish working the surface, albeit randomly and sporadically. All in all, a good day... Caught some very nice fish and had beautiful weather. Good way to begin and end the year (all in the same day) on this great lake....
