went to rock on saturday, couldn't take not fishing for a while. left the boat at home as the wind was picking up at home, and would be fishing by myself. safety first, and it's a small boat. fished from shore, across the bridge and right below it. got a few bites on power bait, no fish. added some pautzkes and got a few more bites, no fish. went to straight pautzke's and got a limit in an hour or so. all rainbows around 10 inches, all c&r. is it just me, or is the average size of fish this year at rock smaller than usual?

To answer your question, yes, and no. From what I could gather talking to the State people, they kind of over planted Rock with fry/fingerlings, and small catchables. The belief is that Rock can take whatever they can put in it, and for the most part that is true from what I can see. Because there are so many small fish still in Rock, they will take a bait or lure first.

On the other hand, there are a lot of the smaller fish being eaten by the bigger fish, and they have been all along. As a result, when you can get past the little guys, the big guys are fatter then normal, numerous, and in general the best condition they have ever been in. The trick is to get past the little guys and compete with them for the big guys attention -- something that is not at all easy!

Amen Anglinarcher - The last report I saw was from October and they planted 27,000 rainbows @3 fish to a pound. These are REALLY pesky little buggers and keep grabbing the lures before the big ones get a chance. We have caught some nice ones this past fall but what a pain the little ones are! The good news is they will grow up into dandy's in time.

Been going to Roosevelt this winter instead; very nice fish but they can be fickled and not always on the bite. Mornings seem to be the best.
