I hit Riffe Lake at 5:30am(that's 0530 to you non-civvies). The water was perfect, clear, clean, smooth as glass, and best of all.... All Mine! Sorry, don't mean to be greedy, but we all know that feeling of contentment that comes from having a body of water to ourselves.
As this was my first time on this lake, I really had no idea what to expect. So I launched from the NE launch and tossed a dark grey roostertail behind the boat just to have something in the water 'till I found a spot to still fish. Not 150 yards from the launch and bang! 1st fish of the morning, a nice 10" Smallmouth. Now I like bass, but not for eating, so I let him go. A bit later I found a nice deep (65') spot that the fish finder claimed had a bunch. I dropped a shrimp down to their level (35-55') Not 10 minutes later, the tip heads south. After a very respectable fight, I landed a pretty 12" Koke.
All told this is a great lake. Undeveloped, lots of room for everyone (yes, even waterskiers), deep spots offering nice kokes, shallows for perch and bass. Apparently, there are 3 launches. If you are like me and only use a trolling motor, Launch at the SW location. It's much closer to the dam which is where the Coho's supposedly live.
