A perfect October afternoon with a slight breeze and temps in the mid 60s with sunshine and blue skies meant a great day on the water regardless if any fish were caught. Took my Dad out and we fished together from 1-5pm on the far south end shallows. The water level was down and weed growth was heavy, so much of that end was "taken out of play", but if the fish were there and looking for food. The most challenging aspect was navigating the weeds and reading the water- any type of "open areas" on the lake bottom where there was some depth in between or along the heavy weed lines were places we were finding fish. These areas were not defined simply be the lack of visible vegetation at the surface, but you really had to search these areas out by looking subsurface (good polarized glasses were a must have). Upon locating good holding water, the takes would come almost immediately if there was a fish there... After making my first cast of the day, the indicator went down within seconds, and thankfully, that continued for a good portion of the afternoon. Setting our fly about 18"-24" below our indicator, we continued to search out likely holding spots and make casts to what were very small "windows"... My Dad struggled a bit at reading the water and then making accurate casts - but he managed to hook into some very nice fish that were difficult to land given the weed growth and lack of open water to play them in. I landed a couple that were right at 19" with most fish between 14-18" and a few dinks around 8" or so. We hit over a couple dozen between the two of us, which was pretty good given the amount of time our flies were not in the water given the conditions, but that is what made it fun and challenging. Eventually we moved out into open water and fished to 10ft with no success... we moved back into the weeds for the last hour and hit some more fish before calling it a day a bit after 5pm. Fly pattern by the way was a bloodworm....
