Fishing the W. Wash. lowland lakes has been bleak the past month or so, but venturing out for a Saturday morning effort is better than watching the boob tube... or tackling the "hunny do" list, so Pete and I tried good ol' Green Lake again. Met on the northeast end at 6:45 AM, lines in the water a bit after 7:00. Air temp a chilly 39 degrees, off and on again breeze from the northwest... water temp at the shoreline was 47 degrees... very gray day. Started with orange Power Eggs on one rig, nightcrawler on the other. No sign of fish, until about 8:00, when Pete detected a slight movement of his rod tip, picked up the rod... waited a moment, then set the hook... FISH ON!... Not much of a fight until it hit the shoreline, but with yours' truly handling the net, were able to scoop up a gorgeous 16" Rainbow for Pete. Although the fish are not plentiful right now, they are certainly beautiful specimens in their brilliant Spring spawning colors! Pete's fish came on a nightcrawler, second week in a row he's caught a 16",er that way. That was the only fish caught on this outing... no other bites. Tried several other PE colors and combinations, also tried shrimp... nada! Day remained chilly as a cold front moved in... enjoyed a nice lunch brought by Pete, packed by his lovely wife, Cherie... smoked a couple bowls of my favorite pipe tobacco, and watched the myriads of ducks and people at play... a good morning to be out. Pete left at 11:30 for a prior commitment, I followed an hour later.. had to tackle some of the aforementioned "hunny do" list. PTL!

Stan, when you are fishing a night crawler in Green lake, I'm curious if you are injecting them with air, and floating off the bottom, or under a bobber... or just plain on the bottom?
Normally I hate to fish bait on the bottom of these urban lakes. Warmer times of year there is too much weed growth and algae, etc.
You may get away straight on the bottom during the colder water like this, less salad on the bottom
Curious about your thoughts.

Quad... Pete was using a couple of marshmallows to add buoyancy... I usually fish the worm on the bottom during the winter, fish don't seem to have any difficulty locating them when aquatic vegetation has died off. In Spring & Summer I'll inject them with air, use mashmallows, or fish them under a bobber. I have experimented with other techniques... found that I can use a pinned corky above the worm... I also like to use a product called "EZ Eggs" which also adds buoyancy (slide a couple through the hook and set them an inch above on the leader). Am open to any other suggestions... worms/nightcrawlers seem to me to be one of the best natural baits. PTL!

Stan,
Yes, I agree on night crawlers being a top natural bait for trout. I don't know why but I just don't care to fish Power Bait or Power Eggs. That being said, still fishing is still fishing.... you are still sitting on your butt waiting for a bite. But I'll go with the worms or even wax worms, etc. every time.
