May 9-11 Potholes reservoir report
Friday was windy and we arrived for an evening fish. No fish. Lots of wind.
Saturday we were on the lake by 8:30AM. Onboard were Wm, Jeff, Phil and Susan. Susan aptly took the helm and we began our search at Medicare Beach working back into Lind Coulee 16 to 20 fow. At about 10AM we started getting a good bite and boated our first fish. After that we had 2 to 3 fish per hour all day. All good keepers but nothing very large. The largest was a fraction less than 18 inches. We ended with 20 Walleye, 4 lost at the boat, and one 4+ lb. Small Mouth which, being Walleye fishers, we C&Rd.
Sunday morning we started at Crab Creek with the same crew and landed another 6 fish, lost 2 before noon and Jeff had to leave. After a rest the three members went back out to Lind Coulee and took another 10 fish, lost 3, C&Rd 4 more because we did not want to clean any more fish. Again, all were nice eaters.
So what worked? We tried spinners in silver, green, chartreuse, and brass. None of those worked. We rigged lindy rigs with 1.5 to 3 oz. weights. No good either. Jeff started getting fish consistently so we started using his rig model. 12” 3oz. bottom bouncer with a 24” leader. Smiley blade, 2 beads, green glow, preferred and slow death hook. Real crawlers chopped ½” behind the hook. We tried Gulp Crawler Chunks with no success. The color of the blade was everything. For those 2 days it had to be a Mack’s small smiley blade in …….wait for it….. Orange with Black tiger stripes. Today may be a totally different color.
This was an outrageously great trip. The fish are still biting as I have never seen before. Get out there and do some fishing.
