First time here, When we put in some people on the shore caught a 2+ pound LM so I prepared myself for a good day.

Launched off the west end hitting up some lillys as we circled behind bird island. No luck. Switched gears bottom fished for anything for abit, No luck. Lots of risers.

(o yeah, the bugs were absolutely out of control...my goodness)

Continued down the freeway side aways then back up the other, no luck no nothin'. It was a nice day tho, not too hot and not windy at all.

Did you try the springs by "Catfish Charlie's Island" along the north shoreline? There are remnants of an old cabin on this small island, and sometimes fish like to congregate around the springs there. Be advised that what you're calling "Bird Island" is actually Harper's Island -- the west end is closed to anglers. If you try fishing for trout at Sprague, you may have better luck. There was a recent plant of 300,000 Steelhead smolts into Sprague Lake, and when they grow up, there will be great trout/steelhead fishing!

My, the results of the 2007 "rehabilitation" certainly seems indistinguishable from a deliberate attempt to destroy the spiny ray fishery. Even three years ago the DFW was making excuses about "it taking time to establish a warmwater fishery". I've not heard about anybody catching anything in that place for years..

Have not fished Sprague yet this year, but last year the bass were right against the bank this time of year. I found spinner baits to be best, with top water chuggers best early and late in the day.

If the water is not too green yet, a good oversized swimbait should still work well also.
