I took my wife with me on this easy hike up to Independence, maybe 8 other cars in the parking lot, so not too many people, and the weather was beautiful. The fishing was slow, but the fish were rather large for an alpine lake. I started off with a castmaster, nada, then i tried a dardevil spoon, nada, then i set up a corky/worm plunk set up casted it and started getting my fly rod ready, as i was tying on a fly i look over and my rod is doubled over no tap tap, just went from slack to completely bent with continous pressure, i set the hook, and fish on, it fought pretty well, and i brought in a fat, nicely colred 13" alpine bow. After that i got one other hit that i missed, my wife got bored quick so i only spent maybe 1 hour fishing. I rated it a 2 because i only caught 1 fish, but i really liked this lake and had a good time.

That is a really nice fish for any alpine lake. Great catch and thanks for the report!

That is a nice alpine trout. Looks like the swim trunks made the trip, did you go for a swim? Water temp listed as 46-50, extremely chilly water.

I've been going to that lake since about 1978. It always held larger fish than Coal lake, down below.
Sometime I hope you will make the short hike into the lake that is between Coal and Independance.
I want hear about that one.
(Another alpine lake that produced 30+ fish days when I was a kid, is Lake Josephine, located behind the Stevens Pass Ski area, along the Pacific Crest Trail)

I'm pretty sure this lake gets stocked, which is why the fish are bigger.

@djbutler, thanks bro!
@ motoboat, no i didnt swim, but there were others who did, they swore and yelled how cold it was too, lol. i felt with my fingers.
@ quadfather i will hit pass next weekend and write up a report.
@ chromer wrong. most alpine lakes get stocked with fry yet fish only reach 9" at full maturity in many of them, coal lake for example gets 7'" as full grown adults, but in lake chitwood( 100% wild) they get as big as 18" your logic is dead wrong.

Holy cow... sorry to press your buttons I guess... Is it something I said for you to call my logic "dead wrong"? A little harsh, eh? Jeez...

@ chromer if you post something wrong as a statement of fact on my report comments, prepare yourself for a rebuttal good sir, I'm not angry at all, I'm just a know it all lol.

Your logic about stockers rarely getting big is wrong. Fish size always depends on pressure, feed, and size of lake, not on if they are wild or not. @chromer @jonb
