Probably other lakes to try that would yield better results right now, but Green Lake was our target. First opportunity to fish with my fishing partner of long-standing, Pete, as his wife Cherie is recovering from surgery and he was able to get away for a short time this AM. Arrived a bit before 7:00, to the east shoreline by 7:00, already three other fishermen set up there. Temp at the outset was a chilly 36 degrees, water temp at the shoreline was 46 degrees. Overcast, not a breeze... lake a flat calm. Found our spots and began fishing with Power Eggs (fl. orange) on both rigs (the fluorescence really helps in dark or dirty water conditions), 3' leaders. Fished hard all morning long, tried various baits... worms, shrimp, Power Bait (asstd. colors), spin-cast an assortment of lures,... NADA!... not even a nibble! Pete left about 11:30, not having a hit, but was good to have him with me again... thoughts and prayers with him and Cherie. Finally, about 1:00 had my first hit, a solid take-down and reeled in a beautiful Rainbow of 15" (fl. orange PE)... these fish are really exquisite, bright and strong, great fighters all the way to the net. Had two more subtle hits before leaving the lake at 2:00, commitments later in the afternoon.
Saw many fishermen come and go during my time at the lake... some on the shoreline, some on the 65th St. pier, saw only two other fish caught. I believe the fish are holding near the bottom and have become lethargic in the colder lake water. Perhaps the better fishing would be in the afternoon as the temps rise a bit. Heavy presence of the toxic algae bloom along the shoreline... have no idea if it affects the fishing?! As were the fish I caught, last week, upon cleaning the fish today, I found its stomach stuffed with a greenish plankton... these fish are feeding well and growing fast.
Wishing all a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year! PTL!
