We've had strong easterly winds that have kept me away from Merwin most of the year. Finally, saw an opportunity to get the kayak out on the water. The lake was glass most of the day and saw a school of fish popping the surface straight across from Speelyai in the morning and spent the rest of the day doing a large figure 8 in that area of the lake.

Bite was consistent until 10 AM, spotty until 2 PM, and non-existent after that. Caught four fish on a hoochie spinner with a silver blade, 2 on some new plastic blades from Dutch Fork Custom lures, and 1 on a Worden's Triple Teazer behind either a small KoneZone flasher or a UV slingblade dodger. Longlining 80-100' back with no weight or 1 oz at 50' seem to be the ticket.

Fish are in amazing condition for January. Three fish measured 14" with the rest measuring between 12-13". As always they beautifully vibrant red and tasted amazing.

I 'm not sure I understand, "beautifully vibrant red " usually means they are into spawning mode, while certainly a pretty sight it is not the peak condition for eating these fish . Just pre-spawn is usually peak. Great job, though. Photos of those great colors? Bob R

Bob R. The spawners are all long dead months ago. I was talking the color of the meat. All the fish are chrome now.

See the photos here (I post under the same username): http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?t=900138&page=2
