Back to Black Pine Lake 5/17....

Last time, all you needed was a small gold spoon, all the hookups you wished. Today, bring the tackle box! The westslopes were almost shut down to lures, onle for an hour before dark they turned on to small spoons or spinners, either brass or copper. But the rest ofm the day, all they wanted were flies. any small (8 to 10) pattern like a wooley bugger in dark gree or black combo worked well, slowly striped just under the surface, primarily next to shore near drop offs. Bites came fast enough once to dialed the color/size of fly. I fished mine with a 4wt, clear intermediate sink line, 6 pound flouro leader. Hooked approximately 30 fish from 10 am (they would not bite in the morning!) until 5 pm, the best bite was between 3 and 4. Bright sunny day, the brighter the day, the better the bite.

Moral of this story, don't expect the same conditions every time out, and gear guys, get a fly rod and some dark patterns. All were fat and between 13 and 15 inches. If I would have only brought small lures that worked so well last time, I would have only hooked a few trout. One other angler on the lake in a pontoon, he was also slowly stripping flies and doing well.

Be back in a couple weeks. This place is the cosmic funk!
