I have lost a few but they were on Mack's lure set up and after loosing three times I think it's they an issue with that lure? But willing to learn what others are doing? Tight lines.

5/31/2016 2:45:00 PMHunter757- I've seen it when we fi shined together in the derby. He uses braided line for the trail hook. Not sure how he ties it but it seems to do the trick. I'll let him explain lol.

5/31/2016 4:56:00 PMI'm very particular about tying my kokanee hooks and leaders (to the point where any store bought rigs I purchase I tear apart and re-tie - for the most part I buy the components and tie my own).
The hook and leader prescription is as follows:
1) use about 2' of 65 lb red power pro braid to snell the hooks. Use size 1 or 1/0 gamakatsu split shot/drop shot hooks (sz 1 for kokes, 1/0 for sockeye) and I use almost exclusively the red ones. The red braid matches the red hooks and is both super strong and super flexible so it allows the trialing hook to fly around and penetrate flesh even if the fish doesn't bite it directly. The hooks are lighter wire than a normal octopus style hook (think quicker/deeper penetration = more hook-ups and less lost fish).
2) tie the egg bumper knot on the lower hook then repeat on the upper hook leaving about 3/4" to 1" in between (you can add a single glow bead or soft glow bead if you want glow here.
3) When you're done with the top bumper knot, pull the leader back through the eye of the hook and trim it off close to the knot.
4) Use some fly thread to wrap over the top bumper knot to secure the loose end of the braid - DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP (if you do your top knot may unravel. In this process you can also tie-in some flash or glow strands (see Bill Herzog's Rasticle videos on YouTube).
5) Finish the fly thread wrapping with head cement or vinyl lure paint. I use the glow colors of vinyl lure paint and actually cover the knots on both hooks just for the extra attraction of having the hook with a 'glow' head.
6) tie a strand of Seaguar Grand Max fluoro carbon (01X = 18.5 lb test) to the top hook eye using the Pitzen knot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYgBOoKXbPQ). This fluoro leader is very clear, very tough, and super strong for its diameter (doesn't matter how big the fat man is if you can't see him). This is especially critical if you like to use super short or short leaders as the fish gets lots of leverage against the dodger with a short leader.
7) Add your hoochie, fly, spinner or whatever attractant you chose.
8) Tie a #14 snap swivel to the other end of the leader using another Pitzen knot.

I've used this set-up pretty exclusively for sockeye and kokanee over the lst 2 or 3 years and had great success. I have not had a trialing hook separate (even when caught in the net with fish thrashing on the top hook) and have not had a leader fail. In the rare cases that 've lost fish my main lines have failed before the leader failed.
