I had planned on going back over to eastern WA this weekend to get another shot at some trophy kokanees and had actually made reservations at a motel in Electric City; but work got crazy busy this week so I knew going away would not be a good idea. But as luck would have it got a text from my buddy Leonard telling me it was fish on in Western WA again for lakes, rivers and salt!!

So now where to go? Oh well, I had missed my home waters of Lake WA of chasing cutthroat so chose to give it a shot! Loaded up the tin cup with the usual arsenal and got to Gene Coulon at 5:00 am; there was a bass fisherman getting his boat reading for launch so we chatted up our displeasure over the decision to close the lake but oh well, that's behind us so let's fish!!

Started out on the south tip of Mercer trolling west with a walleye spin drift set up with a gulp night crawler and crayfish scent. Did get a bump so made the turn up north and soon ran into Leonard who was marking lots of fish from 30- 40 feet and some jumpers. He got 1 and proceeded to try a variety of offerings but no one was interested so decided to go back to basics with by 'go to' set up Brad's cut plug with herring.

Was heading north along the west side of Mercer and soon my rod started dancing! Fish on!! Now the wind was really picking up so was a challenge to get it to the net but manage to ease it into submission! Put it in the cooler but it wasn't long after that the wind and work got the best of me so headed in to get things taken care of.

Now as I was putting the boat on the trailer noticed the coast guard doing a pretty thorough search of someones boat that was trying to launch; soon they were in the boat and detained them for about 20 minutes before letting them out. Then grabbed another boat that was coming in to check him too- Glad they are checking for safety but wanted people to know to make sure you have all your ducks in a row so you don't get detained to long at the launch!

Now where to go tomorrow? Hmmm?

Thanks for he report!
Quick question, I've never done Trilling fishing before. Just drift fishing from shore and bottom rigs and float rigs from shore.
What kind of Rod/Reel is necessary for trolling like what you were doing? Does it need 100% to be a trolling combo or would my 9ft med weight Daiwa D shock 9xi spinning combo be sufficient? Thanks

you put a little herring on it? Never fished Lake Washington, but I think I might try this afternoon. Looks fun!

Glad to see you got one for your effort, Barry! Nice to have Lk WA back as an option again. Hopefully sockeye will continue pouring into the lake in greater numbers and anglers can put some pressure into the system to get the decision on the escapement goal confirmed!

This is the second report where you use a dirty 4 letter word. "Work". Shudders

Looking at your photo of the nice calm water I envy you. My wife and I fished Lake Washington yesterday and never saw any calm water. In fact midway between Mercer Island and the Cedar River we had small swells coming from the Mercer channel plus the wind from the North.
No Cutts for us, just a self release Kok. I normally don't fish weekends as I've been retired for some time but the lakes reopening was more than I could endure. The launch at Atlantic City was a bit crowded around noon. lol

Nice gaff! Would that be for the freshwater halibut found only in the mystical depths of Lake WaWa or for retreival of the downrigger clip? Nice porker of a fish! We'll see a few over 5lbs for sure this year. And yes, according to the counts at the locks, over 15,000 sockey have made their way into the Lake so far.

G-man-Ha Ha! Yes it is for clip retrieval only ( and sometimes when outside the boat it gets me things without having to climb back in!) I am expecting to see some hawgs reported here soon for sure!
@ ARK- that was early but yes it got real sloppy later after about 9 am with a pretty stiff north wind
Thanks Dawg! Let's hook up sometime soon!
pcorazao- yes a herring strip and stuff the chamber with herring too
@scheindogg- check out some of DJ butlers reports! He slays them with a spinning rod, so yes it would work fine but be sure to use some bead chain swivels to keep line from twisting
Thanks Cobrar543- wait to see my report from American lake!

So would I just use bead chain swivels where I would normally use my snap swivels?
I would assume to do something like main line-trolling weight-swivel-leader-flasher-leader-Hoochie. Does that sounds about right? :)
