Was on the water before the sun made it's appearance.
Launched at a rough launch so I wouldn't block the main ramp as I assembled the boat. It was the West end where you first come into the lake.
Headed out and found fish holding in 25' of water at 12'. I start jigging and catch a couple of fish when there is this huge splash about 15 yards away. Figured it was the Osprey hunting. Looked over and nothing takes off. I'm thinking that has to be one BIG fish to make a splash like that. Go back to catching fish and.... SPLASH!! Only this time it is only 10 yards behind me.
I stop fishing and start watching. It's a friggin beaver. He looks at me and SPLASH. He or she is smacking the surface of the water with it's tail.
I go back to fishing with the beaver circling me and smacking it's tail at about 15 yards.
All of a sudden the smack is right behind me I get sprayed with water and almost crap myself. I reel up fast and grab the throttle on the Minn Kota and crank it to 5 and start chasing the beaver. The beaver is not sure what to do and finally dives under the raft.
I go back to fishing and I hear one more smack about 30 yards away and never see it again.
Guess I should have showered before I came out fishing.
Anyway.
I had picked up a lot of different colored Trout Magnets. Started rotating thru the colors and not adding the Crappie Nibbles. Just a jig.
It was red. As long as the sonar showed fish either ar 12' or almost on the bottom it was fish on at every drop. It might take 5-6 attempts to hook one. You never knew what it was going to be, Bluegill (big or small), Crappie (big or small) or Perch.
Wind was very light so was able to just drift with the schools.
When the bite would slow down I would just move 50' to another school.
I am sure I caught over a hundred fish in 5 hours.
Went and scouted out Roses and Wapato for tomorrow's trip.
Wapato was a zoo with power boats. Roses had one canoe. Duh?
Hoping to be done fishing to watch the second half of the Hawks game.

Hey northfork, I too have been slashed by a beaver. I was bank fishing and this beaver was cruising the bank. It did not see me until we made eye contact from less than 5 FT. The beaver was the first one to crap himself and then me. It was late fall on a cold morning. I still remember the surprised look in his eyes. He didn't stick around to see my jaw drop at the shower he gave me. I've really enjoyed following your reports. Thanks, Andy

The strange thing was there wasn't a beaver pond or dam I could see and I had fished that area the day before.
It was obviously a territorial display, but dam did it have to get that close!!

Hey northfork, I can only guess it was a female with young somewhere near. I had always thought the tail slap as an alarm to other beavers. I'm glad it didn't use its teeth on your raft!

A few years ago, in the dark, on the green, a beaver kept doing similar things. We were fishing for coho after the night restriction was lifted for the year, and this beaver kept scaring off the fish. So we tried to scare the beaver off. Several different trips we played this game. One night/ early morning I turned my back to the water to turn my headlamp on to knock the ice of off my guides. (as to not scare fish with the light) The beaver gets his revenge. Soaked me. Smart little bass turds.... I'm positive he recognized me and was waiting for the right time.
