Being it is almost the end of October I decided to give Potholes a try even though the reports have been disheartening. Launched from the DNR launch into a foggy mess and slowly motored over to perch point and Medicare beach. We trolled slow death rigs in 15-35 FOW and only had a couple of quick dink perch (probably) bites. We then slowly motored over to the mouth of Crab Creek and trolled the humps, and the face of the dunes all the way down to the Winchester waste way from 15-35 FOW. We caught 2 dink largemouth, 1 bullhead and 2 eyes. ! eye was 17 inches and the other a 20 incher. We tried just about every color we had throughout the day with silver catching the eyes. We also tried blade baits in a couple of areas that normally produce fish but never had a hit. We finished the day trolling near Medicare beach once again where I caught 2 lb. smallie in 12 FOW. I am beginning to think the enormous pressure this lake has faced for the last couple of years has really drawn down the numbers of both walleyes and perch; to fish all day and not catch even a dink perch is not very normal for Potholes. The water temp was 55 degrees so you would think the fish would be starting to try and fatten up for the winter but our results say otherwise. The only reason I gave the day a 2 was because it was gorgeous out all day with very little wind; only the gnats and ballooning spiders were putting a damper on the day.
