Had boat trouble in the morning, so we got that fixed and finally got on the water around 1:30pm. Ran out to Possession and began trolling deep (around 200' of cable out) in 200-350' of water. Trolled green flashers with brads cut plugs, green ace hi's, and green spoons.
Trolled till around 3 with no action, then wham! Fish on! Line started screeming off the rod with the green spoon. Had three or four good runs, when the fish finally got to the top it was easily a 24lb King! The excitment of the moment added up to a miss with the net, and watching the big guy dissapear back into the depths, and us standing around dumbfounded. (Though were pretty sure we saw an extra fin on him, so our hearts weren't too broken, it was a GREAT FIGHT!
Hurried and got the rig back in the water, and not 15 minutes later the rod popped off the clip again. This time just a little wild blackmouth, that was safely realeased after snapping a picture to prove we landed a fish that day.

Trolled for the rest of the night with one dog fish caught and nothing else. Jigged for a bit around some birds before calling it a night with still nothing.

So at the end of the day, didn't have anything for the bbq, but it was a pretty good day with some fish caught. Just seemed to be one of those days things didn't go right.

Hey, i know its nice to get a picture but please keep the wild kings in the water. Its the law not to bring them out of the water or net a wild king. Check your rule book on how to release them correctly.

Thanks Jerm

There was no net used (as stated in the report) and the fish was literally out of the water for 15 seconds, and only a few inches out of the water. I'm always very careful with wild fish, barbs are pinched, and there was absolutely no harm done to the fish. Theres lots of people out there doing worse...

Jerm, the regulation makes no mention regarding the use of a net, further, you are confusing the freshwater portion of the reg with the saltwater portion.
"Marine Areas 5-13: It is unlawful to bring wild salmon or a species of salmon aboard a vessel if it is unlawful to retain that salmon
(“aboard” means inside the gunwale of a vessel)."
It appears from the photo that the fish is not inside the gunwale, so it's all good.

Actually Jerm, although your intentions are good, the law states that in Marine Areas 5 through 13 "It is unlawful to bring wild salmon or other species of salmon "aboard" a vessel if it is unlawful to retain that salmon." "Aboard means inside the gunwale of the vessel." Page 21...

So, you may absolutely net any salmon, just keep it out of the gunwale of your boat until you determine if it's a legal fish to retain.

Blurock, you did nothing wrong here and by the way, nicely done and great pic! The fish will live! Sorry G-Man, I had to chime in as well. I definitely appreciate members who care about the law and our resources, as long as their comments are accurate which was not the case here. No harm no foul.

Ok i was wrong on bringing them out the water. But still why.
For one thing when you hold a salmon, your are taking some of there protective slim off. Witch can in turn hurt the fish. Granted i know about the gunwale. And it was just a shaker blackmouth so why did you need to take a picture. To prove to you buddies, pointless in my opinion.

JERM, if you ever had a seal take a shaker while you were trying to release it you'd probably change your mind. In the Sound the majority of the fish that I release come out of the water and most get released on the opposite side of the boat while Mr. Fishbreath is waiting for his snack to drop back in the water.

Ive had that happen a few times. That's just part of fishing the salt.
