The chum are in big time at Hoodsport! Got to fish today with WL.com regular natetreat who is as big a fan of chum salmon as I am. It has been several years since I've been to Hoodsport and I was as excited as a kid the night before Christmas. We started fishing around 9am. LT was 8ish, HT around 2:15pm. We fished out of my boat.

The morning was dead, slow, and pretty discouraging. Lot's of fish jumping and teasing, but no bumps for either of us as we went through our tackle boxes, waiting for the bite to turn on. We would see a fish caught now and again from the shore anglers and fellow boaters, but most apppeared to be snagged. We hung in there and hit the payoff around 1pm. The tide was pushing the fish closer and closer to the hatchery and we kept repositioning our boat closer as well. The bite suddenly turned on and stayed on for a good 2 1/2 hours. We caught fish on drifted corkies (very slow, almost a cast out a let it sit, maybe slowwwwly reel in and BAMM! Fish On). We caught fish on jigs under a float (pink was a good color, and also a red/black jig worked well for me). 3-4 feet deep on the jig depth. There was a boat anchored next to us that exclusively used jigs and they had fantastic success, I was impressed.

The majority of the fish we caught during the bite were in the mouth BTW. Very little were snagged. The quality of the fish was pretty much catch and release. We saw some bright fish, but nothing that I would bring home.

The weather conditions were winds out of the south 10 mph (a bit breezy) and temps 40-50, occasional sun, occasionally a few drops came down, All in all a pretty good late fall day.

Great report and your smile says a lot Mike. What time in the tide did the bite turn on? When I went to Area 13 it was the incoming tide. While there was a current and once it slowed it was really slow.

Hi Toni, it was about an hour and a half before HT and lasted all the way to an hour after. No slow down for us. But that morning was brutal, no bites in 3 hrs but we stuck with it so I feel good about that.

In the background of the pic of Nate and his fish is a float tube. Was there many tubes and or pontoon boats out amongst you?
