Went with my buddy on our annual halibut excursion. Launched in the rain at 6am with the loads of other boats that were lined up to launch at Cornet Bay. The rain let up after we got under way and it was a pleasant trip out to Eastern Bank. Dropped three shrimp pots in 250' of water at 7:30 and proceeded to try for Halibut on the bank along with the other 20+ boats that were fishing in the area. We fished herring off spreader bars at between 70-200' of water drifting. Between 8am and 2pm we hooked and boated a 2' dogfish (biggest I've ever caught), a small quill back rock fish, a large sculpin, and one very aggressive rock. I had one good solid strike that took half the bait, but did't stick. Saw a 20 lb halibut landed by another boat, but that was it for the action. We pulled our shrimp pots before heading in. The first pot had 87 spot shrimp, so we we got excited about taking our limits of shrimp home. The second pot had 9....and the third pot had ZERO. At least we went home with something and caught some fish even if they were not halibut. Also saw a very good sized whale cruising over the flat in about 80' of water. That was cool. Weather was great, overcast and calm. Great day on the water even without the halibut. One of these years I'll hook one of those things.
