Yep, so went for lingcod saturday. We weren't having much luck. Just a few rockfish but nothing else. Not even a greenling or an undersized Ling. Then in about 60 ft of water Pat got another snag. He tried to pull it loose like normal, then the snag shook its head. What the heck??

So he tries and tries and tries to pull it up and reel it in. This unknown giant made several long runs on pat. Only having 20 lb test(people usually use like 80 lb for halibut I hear) we were thankful we were only in 60-70 ft of water!!

Then after 15 minutes of this thing bending his pole tip into the water I said its either got to be the biggest ling both of us have ever seen or a halibut. Sure enough I see it. HALIBUT ! ! ! !

Were both thinking no way, how is this possible?!?! 60 ft and in what we thought was rocky area guess not.... And its HUGE! Not 2-3 ft and like 50 lbs like the reports I've been seeing but like wont even be close to fitting in the net and over 4 ft long!!!! I'm thinking HALIBUT STEAKS TONIGHT
BABY ! ! AND FOR A YEAR AFTER!!! WHOOO HOOOO !!!!

Then I say ! ! ! “CHECK THE REGS CHECK THE REGS ! ! ! ! “ Cant remember if theres a size limit but I'm SURE its still open..................

Yep......... season ended Friday. THE DAY BEFORE. And no size limit. I was almost sick...... had to let it go. After looking on online charts I figure it was anywhere from 80-100 lbs. It was easily 4’ head to tail and thick. 100lb fish at $19.99 a lb at the grocery store is a $2000 fish! CRAP!

Anyway heres the end of the fight just before I grabbed the jig with plires and let’r go.

I've Never been so pumped then depressed right after. LoL

60' isn't too uncommon. In Alaska there's bays where they are in 20'. Fun and memorable.

That darn halibut shoul've read the regulations himself. Shame on him for teasing you like that!

Did you hook any others by mistake, in the same area? As much of a bummer as having to release that fish is. Just think, that spot will be fresh on your mind for Halibut season next year! That jig in the Hali's mouth is teeny, compared to what would be used normally for halibut, right? There is a lesson in that too.

Thanks for sharing.
