Decided to avoid the rivers on opening day, ha! Went to Westport instead. We got a late start and got out there just after 11. Weather was beautiful and almost no wind. Ocean side was calm as could be. We brought the usual arsenal, 1-2oz jig heads and purple, brown, black, and white curly tailed grubs. Westhaven park was packed, and the jetty had the most fishermen Ive seen yet. I got my first ling after slack tide on ocean side about half way out. Danny hooks a ling but loses it. Walked out farther about 3/4 of the way and walked past two guys that just netted a nice cabezon. Went a few rocks past them and Danny quickly hooks into a nice blue cabezon. I hook into another cabezon, a brown one. Tide is about half way in, Danny hooks a nice ling, and then a rock fish. We dont get anymore bites for awhile so we decide to fish our way back. We get about half way in and I hook a nice ling and end up having to break it off, it swam into some rocks and back out through another hole. Only a couple of rocks down I hook into another ling and get this one in, completing my limit. We called it a day and finished walking back. We never hit a single fish on the bay side today, all were on ocean side. Also didnt hook a single fish on the out going tide. We saw some massive bait balls, probably anchovies that blackened the water. Massive as in they were probably almost a mile long and swarms of bird feeding frenzies. Also got to see two gray whales working the bait. We used the same technique of casting out past the rocks and twitching the curly tailed grub and letting it sit. We are fishing the grubs very very slow. Most fish were taken on the dark purple grubs. Though brown and white also produced. When we fish the jetty we cover a lot of water rather than staying stationary. All 3 lings were 28-29inches. Only gave the day a 3 because we covered a lot of water to get the fish and went quite a bit of time between bites. Bite times would be completely random throughout the tides.
