Day 2 of the supposed buoy 10 fishing that turned into ocean fishing. We got out of the marina about the same time as yesterday (7:30) and motored across the bar, pretty easy crossing, but we did catch some nice air one time.
Since my rod with the green flasher being hot yesterday we all changed up to similar set-ups. Today we used both anchovies and herring (herring only yesterday) with about equal success.
The day started a little slow with no action for the first 45 minutes, then the bite began to pick up. There were nets flying on all the boats at one time or another. Our boat was having good action, the hot rod in the boat had a larger green flasher than mine yesterday. The coho were pretty nice size, about 6-8 lbs, we had 8 in the boat and were hoping for two more to fill our limits, preferably a king, before we have to head across the bar.
High tide was noon and it was getting to be 11:30, then my rod starts bouncing and line begins to peel off. I grab the rod and feel the strong tug on the other end, I tighten the drag so I can make some headway. I am not gaining much ground until the fish turns around and heads back our way, I thought I lost it for a minute, but I reel faster and feel the tug. He makes several dives as he get close to the boat and we confirm it is a king and finally bring him aboard, bonk my second king ever. This one had more size 12.25 lbs after cleaning.
We get one more coho into the boat before we have to get back across the bar giving us our 10 fish limit with one king and 9 coho.
Reports from the river were slow, the fish checker did say if someone caught one in the river it was a good size fish, but most were not catching anything. I was glad we were able to get across the bar, out there it looked like everyone was catching a lot of fish, mostly coho with kings sprinkled in.
