I got to get back to fishing my “home” waters today, launching out of Edmonds Marina with my friend Robbie. I arrived promptly at 5:45am at the sling, only to discover it doesn’t open until 7am! Oh well, first in line…

We were targeting coho. LT was 5am. I decided to run down to the oil docks and troll back up to Edmonds, which was actually the opposite of what I had in mind, that being to run with the tide. I realized pretty quickly when I saw the amount of blow-back on my downriggers. In any case, shallow rod set to 50 feet on the cable with an 8” red flasher and medium glow hoochie. Deep rod, 60-90 feet, 11” chartreuse/green flasher with magnum green glow hoochie. Both rigs had herring strips for flavoring with a “little extra” in the brining solution…

Lines down, 7:15am, and within a couple minutes the first fish hit red rig at 50 feet and was reeled to the boat by Robbie. Line back goes down. Within minutes fish number two hit at 60 feet on the green rig, reeled in by me. Line back down, within minutes fish number three hit green rig at 60 feet and Robbie reels this one in. Wow, three fish just like that. I check my watch – 7:45am, one half hour of fishing.

By now we have run up to the ferry lane (trolling 2.9 to 3.4mph) and we turn around and head back down to the terminal. Lines have settled a bit deeper now that we are trolling with the tide. Looking around I’ve seen several nets out this morning so I can see its pretty decent fishing for others as well. We trolled another 45 minutes and no bites. Fish on the fish finder, I’m really not too worried about getting the last fish. I’m at 90 feet on the green rigger and see some marks at 80 feet. I hit the up button, downrigger goes up 5 feet and BAMM – the rod gets a hit. In to the boat comes the last coho of the day. We had our limits by 8:45am, a nice, productive morning of fishing.

I considered briefly switching to humpy gear and running up to Shipwreck, but a long "Honey Do" list and the fact that we’ll be out again tomorrow made it an easy decision to call it a morning.

I would say the coho are in. By the way, like the pinks, the coho are small this year. All four fish were in the 3-4 pound range. Real beauties though…

Nice Job Mike & Robbie! The Coho "Are" running small, just like the pinks were.. I have a question about using either Monofilament vs fluorocarbon for leader?? & Will using either or increase my odds of catching Coho?? I've been using 30lb-40lb Izorline. We've been catching fish but just curious..Also if I'm fishing 60ft+ Does All my gear all have to be Glow?? Thnx

I always use fluorocarbon 30-40lb in the salt and 8-12 when drift or float fishing in the river. 17-25 in lakes for salmon

Sergiu - I use 25 lb. mono for my saltwater leaders. At 55-60 feet deep there is no light in the Sound, so glow would be a good choice.

This link may not work. I used to use a 35mm camera flash to light my squids. But now I use this deal. It works well. Check it out on Amazon. Rapala Charge and go.
I use 40 pound test FC and I have had good success with it, no knot issues. Used to use 30 pound Maxima, but even that would break sometimes if the fish was large and it got a sideways pull on the flasher..

Nice going, I am wondering what the heck is gong on with all these small fish,...Edmonds Derby winning fish dressed, 7,48#s,..smallest ever,...just had to get that off my chest, again, nice going!!
