Had the chance to get out fishing with NateTreat, local guide and WA lakes member today, we each somehow had a day off frm guiding, and WHAT do we do on our day off? Go fishin! Started in a cool private section of the samish, Nate slammed a nice 5-6 lb jack on his 2nd cast on fire cure eggs, luckily hook was on outside so he went back. We proceed to lose 4-5 more fish on in the next hole, then I finally get a solid hook into a bronze 24 pound buck that i bonked. We made our way downstream, lost a few more fish and one more big dark buck we also had to release, they wernt taking the eggs great, had lots of float downs but not many hookups and the hookups were outside the mouth, so in the samish they went back. Finally nate gets a great takedown and lands a BEAUTIFUl chrome 15lb hen we bonk, make our way back upriver, and we nail a double header, nate gets a darker 20 lb hen to the bank and it pops off at our feet, luckily because it was pretty dark, and mine makes it to the beach, a chrome 12lb hen we bonk, then on our way upriver more nate nails another bookend 15 pound chromer hen and we're limited for the day. It was fun, went through like 6 skiens of eggs. Here are the pics!

how in heavens earth do you both who are "GUIDES" hook so many fish in a flossed position when fishing eggs under a float? I call bs for 1000 alex trebek.

Good to see folks putting this incredible weather to good use!

PS - Enough with the flossing comments already. Salmon in rivers seldom eat, they are simply defending their territory and trying to "spoil" the spawn of competing fish. When they strike it isn't always with an open mouth, they ram, nudge and swipe at each other especially in tight quarters like the Samish.

man i know they arent eating. unless these 2 upstanding "guides" were bobberdoggin then there is no way they can be flossin that many fish bobber fishing with eggs. I wasnt born yesterday. alex trebek what is the answer?

R.ton... why is it that we have to deal with your BS so much? Thanks everyone else, and G-man, glad to hear someone who knows what they are talking about.

In the Samish theres no current, we short float 2 feet under float, WAY off bottom with ZERO weight. Explain to me how we can floss a fish with a clump of eggs and no weight short floated in a river with no current? if you read the report we had 3-4 outside the mouth and 4 inside. As G--man mentioned, these fish are aggressive, not feeding, theres PLENTY of reasons why we hooked those fish on the outside lip. anything from a early hookset, where the fish didnt have eggs fully in mouth, late hookset where he was in the process of spitting the hook, too big of clump of eggs so he had only a piece of it in his mouth and hook was on outside... theres plenty of reasons, we also can see the fish in a few holes, the big one we released, we watched come up 3 feet from the depth to eat the eggs, and he was hooked outside the mouth. Theres more reason R.ton, i would post a bunch of throat shot samish king pics for ya, but your really not worth my time and the legit guys know why the float and egg fishing results in outside hookups, so stop your B**ching

Looks like a ton of fun with the wetaher and dog out there too and having water mostly secluded. Sometimes the fish will be milling around in that kind of slower water (well until one gets hooked and they spook LOL) so they may get snagged up on pectoral fins and such as they go right by the eggs. I could see how it would be possible to hook fish around the mouth but not in it using a bobber and eggs especially if you can see your presentation (think they take it when it goes right by their mouth even though the bobber might only budge/ wiggle instead of disappear underwater cuz eggs may only rub outside of mouth) or if you are free drifting the eggs in slow water instead of bobber you could certainly get outside-in hookups. Also if you have a weight under the bobber so a section of the leader from the weight to the eggs gets an angle more reminiscent of drift fishing could end up getting outside mouth hookups.

Clearly the eggs under bobbering will reduce the amount of outside-in hookups compared to drifting especially if the weight is right at the eggs or there is no weight under bobber.

I'm guessing if someone were actively flossing with corky and/or yarn and/or bead or whatever in those conditions that they'd be bringing in a ton more fish than they seemed to do in the report. I'm glad FF mentioned they were hooked how they were, it helps others understand the conditions and fishing.

All that said I know there are some awesome technique bobber guys (thinking jens or the like) that get pretty much all their fish to actively bite with that method and spend a ton of time on the water to find sections that aren't heavily fished by drift gear guys or where water is more conducive to bobber/eggs than drift gear. It can be a science with all the scent sensitivity of fish, curing processes and all. So I have a ton of respect for those guys and would let them actively fish a drift I might be trying to drift fish or floss a fish in but at the same time these two guys looked like they did things the right way letting go the fish that were not hooked in the mouth plus had a good day on the river. Well done IMO!

It is looking like there will be a lot of river coho potentially for them to get people on to later in the year for someone that may not be getting the fish they want. I suspect guys like jens and R. ton are not going to need guides for that but there will be a good amount of people that will be happy to have a guide give up their time and experience to get someone paying to get after a few fish. And it is looking like the N Puget Sound rivers are going to have some strong coho returns this year. Hopefully that makes for good first year guide seasons with nate and fishinfreak and I wish them well.

Hope that all makes sense. I'm having to type with interruption LOL so not gonna proofread and it is just my one personal opinion. Good luck to everyone on the water! It is good to see people getting out there even when they are not successful. And R. ton, you certainly are a wealth of knowledge as well on some of the threads so hope to continue to see you around.

Nice looking fish nate! FF- that thing almost looks like it has been to the taxidermist LOL. Good size to it though. Good luck when school starts back up FF. Ah the few nice warm fall days wandering around Red Square looking at the ladies... Too old for that now. NOT too old to fish though :-) OK back ot other stuff.

If you have NEVER hooked a fish on the outside of the mouth with bait in 30 years, then you havent caught very many fish period. Ha

Anyway I enjoyed the pics and the dog. FF, how often are you drifting/drift gear vs float and eggs out there? I'm sure some of that water is more drift (free drift or light lead) but much of it egg water too. Let's try to keep things civil all! The guys that have been around awhile are smart enough to know whats up and not have to say anything (I bet wolverine is somewhere out there rolling his eyes at the youthful exchange). Good luck on the water all.

Knotabassturd- in the samish we float fish 100% of the time. Theres not nearly enough current to drift fish the holes i fish. No weight necessary either. Just float egg and hook.

R.ton... No, wtf r u talking about. When i short float a straight jig under a bobber sometimes steelhead are hooked under the mouth or outside. I didnt floss them, it was because of the way they strike it. Open your eyes dude and stop with all the flossing BS nobody wants to hear you

ODH- I think R. ton's tone is not agreeable and neither is FF's. Hopefully they both just keep it at the base thoughts and exclude the emotion going forward to make it better for all. I would hope we can have discussions w/o all the emtoion. I also completely understand R. ton's thoughts (not tone) but figure we can move on :-) BTW I agree with you on this! BUT I would rather fish with jens ;-) Or wolverine! Good luck all on the water and stay safe. Oh, and pick up any garbage you might find. It is a basic and necessary responsibility for all fishing people on the waters.

Yes, the flossing comments are not appropriate on people's fishing reports. Keep it on the forums as a general discussion please. Also, it's really annoying for someone who has never posted a fishing report on this site to post comments that are rude at best. It totally violates the terms of service that you willing agree to when you join this site. So take a couple weeks to think about it and join us then. Bye.....
