Met up with the Nephew for my first ever trip on the skagit, he fishes it all the time. We put in at the Edgewater park around 4pm. Nice ramp, plenty of parking and it is free to use. We headed upstream and around the first big bend and anchored up and tried a few different methods for 4 hours, no fish, no bites. Only saw two fish roll all evening and heard of one fish caught.
First trip of the year for the nephew getting skunked, last trip out they put two limits in the boat.

If you have not fished this river before I am told that it is pretty safe to go all the way up to the collapsed I5 bridge with a prop but beyond that you are risking it. Pretty good current and sandy bottom appeared to be pretty snag free, unlike the Snohomish.

When you say outboards ,do you mean a short shaft motor? My Smokercraft has a long shaft motor. Is that good for the river below the collapsed bridge?

You will be OK right now but you must read the water. Sand bars on both sides of the river can get you in trouble. Later in the season it can be hard to get much past Young s Bar if you don't have a short shaft or pump. Depends on How much rain we get and water released by dams.
