I hit the Sky today with fishing guide Guru Ryan Hung. 5:00am seemed early enough, but the cable hole was ridiculously crowded already! There were plenty of Steelies being caught, but we were stacked in-between fishermen too tight for my beginner-intermediate skills. I call Ryan the Guru, because he is truly a master of the art of fishing and he uses his senses to guide his methods and actions. He also exercised great patience and respect as a teacher and listener. He taught me a variety of knots, rigging, casting, mending, floating, drifting and fishing etiquette. The Guru was extremely courteous and respectful to all other fishermen we encountered, and the respect and appreciation was always reciprocated. To avoid the crowds, we went up river and found an amazing place where the current was textbook, at a walking pace following a rapids section. The sun glistened on the water with a majestic mountain in the background. This was perfect to work on my skills. We hit it pretty hard from all sides, colors, top and bottom with minimal outcome, but what a pretty place and what a gorgeous day! Thanks Guru Ryan for your fine guidance today, teaching me skills that I can take with me for future encounters with the river. I rated it a "3" even though no fish were caught. Yes, I was disappointed not to land a steelhead today, but I will. It was just such a magical day at the river. Anything less than a "3" would not give this day justice.
