Well, this was only the first day of a three day trip. Ten of us rent a double wide at Boggan's resort each year for this annual excursion. We did not get to come last year as the river was blown out with really high water and bad weather. We were all jonesing for our fishing fix by the time this trip came around. The first two of us hit the river by 9:30AM, the air temp was 26*F and there was ice on the bushes along the river. Fishing was slow and tough. All of the good spots for bank fishing, from two years ago were changed and through the whole day we only landed one very small rainbow trout and one 21" steelhead from just below the hatchery.
The second day, we again awoke to below freezing air temps and the river tempted at 36*. At that cold, the fish were pretty slow to bite. We were trying varying colors of Corkeys and beads, with and without yarn. The two of us worked hard all day at a long run called the sucker hole and did manage to land four hatchery fish and two suckers. The last fish of the day was caught on a 3/8oz pink jig head with a pink yarn body and pink feather tail, under a float. Our third and final day out, we were on the river by 6:30AM. At 11AM the sucker hole had us skunked. We moved back to the parking area below the hatchery. As we parked, I watched an old timer land a nice hatchery fish. Over the next half of an hour he landed the balance of his limit. My fishing partner could not resist, so he struck up a conversation. This kind fisherman had us trim our lead by half, lengthen our leaders and switch to a 12mm fluorescent Orange corkey with no yarn, pegged about an inch above the hook. Over the next two hours we hooked four and landed two very nice steeleys. What a great way to end the trip.
Overall, the ten fishermen brought home 30 nice fish over three days. We saw elk, deer, fish and friends, the weather was great and the fishing was ... Well GREAT.
