This report is actually for a Secret River on the Olympic Peninsula.

Monday I got to fish for the day with outdoor writer Jason Brooks and guide Ted Schuman of Winter Run Guide Service. Ted took us on to an Olympic coast river that has been fishing red hot of late.

We started the day trolling plugs in some beautiful runs. The river was that "steely green" we all know and love. The weather couldn't have been nicer - cool, but not frigid, light breeze, the sun breaking through the clouds, and no rain the whole day.

Ted knows his steelhead water and it wasn't too long before we got into some fish. Jason first with a beautiful hatchery of 8-9 pounds, then my rod went off and I caught and released a rosy 8 pound native. We were running Yakima Mag Lip plugs in a variety of colors.

After pulling plugs for awhile we switched up to bobber-dogging. I haven't used this technique much, but I could sure grow to like it! The fish liked it too, as we went three for four, catching another couple hatcheries and releasing a beauty of a native fish. Jason also had a fish on that rain 50 yards upriver in no time before turning around and charging back at us, finally coming unbuttoned just a few yards from the boat. "A fish of a lifetime" was Jason's comment. The terminal gear were yarnies, egss, and a "special secret weapon" I was sworn to not reveal.

We ended the day with three hatchery pigs ranging 9 to 12 pounds, and released two 8 pound natives. The hatchery fish had beautiful meat, BTW.

A great day of fishing. Watch for the video to come out in a few weeks. Thanks Ted and Jason for a much needed break and hot fishing!

Looks like the bogey.Nice catch,I'm choking on sour grapes here. When it comes to steelhead my love was the often overlooked waters,West twin, deep creek, salt creek, even McDonald creek....Nothing like having a pristine creek to yourself.I cherish the days I could do the hiking and coax those mysterious fish out of a hole they could barely hide in.
