Fished below John Day Dam for shad and sturgeon and was able to have the best day oversized sturgeon fishing trip I have had yet. There was no shortage of bait to be caught either, which is always nice. We went 6-9 on the sturgeon all from 7' to 8.5' so we got our work out in this day. We were using whole shad with 10oz cannon ball and 12/0 hook. Couldn't ask for a better day until the wind came up. That comes with the territory down there though.

Remember if you do fish below John Day there is a 2.4 mile deadline you have to be below to fish for sturgeon. The marker is the grain elevator on the Oregon side. If you are below that you are good.

Yes, we used whole shad for bait. We went again this weekend and not as lucky got blown off the water friday thru Sunday. Did get to catch a few smallmouth with my boy. I'll be back down over the Fourth of July!!! Hopefully the wind doesn't blow!
