Well Shad fans...Those hard figthing silver fish are definately here! Headed down to John Day and picked up a one day Oregon license for 12 bucks and gave Shad fishing a shot. They were hitting all morning on anything pink, Shad Killer jigs in 1/16th oz were the hottest item. My fiancee Pam caught her very first shad, a 2.5 lb hen that took drag and got her all excited about catching more! I tinkered with hand tied chatruse/green shad dart wrapped with gold crystal flash and red thread. I then attached after market chartruse eyes. I caught close to 20 shad (took home 24 to be smoked and canned...) with that jig, until the paint was all chipped off, and there were only a couple strands of flash hanging from it! I have to program my PC with Samsung camera hardware so I can download my shad pics. Included in this report is my Crows Butte Smallie pics, along with my sculpin prototype jig hanging from a Bass's mouth. Good luck guys. The Jigmiester.

Were you fishing the John Day River, or just near the dam. We will be in Boredman for a week, and want to try the SHad. Thanks

BRIAN. We were fishing by the fish bypass on the Oregon side downstream Oregon side at John Day. I think that the bulk of the shad run has moved upriver to McNary over the last week. According to those who track the migration movements of the shad, the bigger females should be showing up in higher numbers now. Just about any point, sandbar and hole next to eddies should hold fish now. We fished a #5 split shot 2 feet above our darts and shad killer jigs. Pink, flourescent red, chartruse and orange in that order of productiveness were our best colors. Good luck if you go. TJM
