Good morning everyone, this is my first post on here. So a friend and I went fishing this last saturday just north of Seven Bays. This weekend we were beach fishing as my usual fishing partener with the boat was coyote hunting. Lines were were wet by 7:45 and the wind was howling. We had a couple of combinations on (2 pole endorsments). I was running the ever popular Garlic mallows and nightcrawlers and my friend had two combination of garlic scented powerbait. It didnt really matter what we had on, it was pretty slow until 10 am and by 1 we had our limit. I was using a single barbless hook and ended up throwing a couple 16"s back in. The first fish of the day for me was a real suprise, it started as a delicate nibble and came back to just whale my nightcrawler. Right off the bat the fish started to spool some line. I was thinking to myself holy smokes did the completely loosen my drag and not realize it? After a solid fight I landed a 24" 5lb.1oz natural rainbow! What a beauty, theres not much of a better sight when you look at your fish bucket and 6 inches of Tail is hangin out! Every other fish was the typical 16-18" stockers. Tight lines everyone!

Nice fish, you said limits but there's only 4 in the picture, how many did you catch? Roosevelte limit is 5 each I believe.

C&R is not about what hooks you are using but bait vs lure. I think you are required to keep all fish if you used any kind of bait, powerbait or even scent. Just two cents. Thanks for a nice report!

Welcome!!! Thanks for the report. That native looks beautiful.(I'm with romanfishing, no c&r with bait.)

As far as C&R I emailed Fish and Game. Here is what i got back:

"unless otherwise listed for a particular fishery or a particular body of water, then yes, it would be legal to release fish caught with bait, but if the fish has swallowed the hook, or been hooked in the gill, eye, or tongue, it should be kept if that species is legal to retain.
Also, as per the Statewide Freshwater Species Rules (under TROUT), page 17 of the regulation pamphlet states the following: “When fishing with bait, ALL Trout (except STEELHEAD) equal to or greater than the minimum size are counted as part of the daily limit (regardless of) whether they are kept or released.” This is because Trout take bait much deeper into their bodies than plain lures or bare hooks, and the mortality rate on those fish when released is much, much higher. If you were fishing with a plain lure or hook (no bait), you would be allowed to fish catch-and-release for as long as you wanted, until the daily limit has been retained."

Have any of the fisherman out there done any fishing (bank or boat) in the Spring Canyon area or Geezer Beach?

Very nice to know the specifics on C&R, I have never let a fish go that has been hooked in the gills/tongue or have been swallowed or bleeding. Fortunately the fish I did let go was hooked on the side of the mouth and not deep, I felt he/she would be just fine. In the summer I do quite a bit of fly fishing and regularly practice C&R. The winter is for smoking fish so I normally keep everything I catch. I do appreciate the info and will take that into account in the future, no harm done.

Just to clarify, anglers are NOT required to keep TROUT when fishing with BAIT (as defined in the regs). Wormeater's post is correct, and the regs are clear when fishing for TROUT with BAIT. You can catch & release (if you choose) the legal limit for that body of water, but at that point you MUST cease fishing or you are in violation of legal retention rules. Daily limit for Rainbow TROUT at Roosevelt is 5, no more than 2 over 20". The kokanee daily limit at Roosevelt is 6, no more than 2 with intact adipose fins, and they do NOT count against your TROUT limit. That means your daily TROUT bag limit at Roosevelt may contain 11 fish subject to the limitations specified in the "Special Rules" section of the current reg pamphlet.

As a point of education, that nice 24" fish is not a native, the adipose fin has clearly been clipped, so it is a net pen carryover. Still a nice fish, but from personal experience with them when they go into "brood mode" (dark colors) they are less than prime table fare. I've caught a few like that in the past, but won't retain them anymore unless they are hooked in a manner where their survival is questionable.

Also, my use of caps for TROUT and BAIT is identical to that of WDFW in the regs and not meant for any other purpose. My use of caps for "not" and "must", however, are for emphasis.

Nice report and great pics. ;-)

More great information, thank you. I did notice a bit of a lack of color in the meat on the "brood". We will find out how he/she smokes on thursday.

You are already a good fisherman and will only get better with the way you accept input from others. I'm guessing that big one smoked up OK. I too thought it was a native. (hewesfisher clarified that ) As you can see all of us are wanting to play by the rules and I'm sure you do too. I hope to read more reports from you soon.
