I decided to head to Roosevelt Thursday the 20th and try for some of these large Kokanee I have been hearing about. We launched about 7am in a smokey haze from the Lincoln ramp and motored down past Sterling Point. We started marking fish right away on the drop-offs in about 75-150' of water. Managed to land 2 rainbows and a walleye in the first hour, but no kokes. I knew it was mostly kokes I was marking so I decided to stay with these schools and start experimenting. As it turns out these fish were willing to bite our offerings once we presented it at 2.3 mph. We landed our wild koke limit and called it a day. Awesome fish! All about 17" bright silver bullets caught on corn and a smile blade hoochie rig fished at 55'. I am looking forward to return for a couple more koke trips before my fall chinook trips on the Columbia start September 1st.

Highlights besides the beautiful fish was the calm conditions and 6 bighorn sheep.

Low points were the smoke and the dead fish floating in the water. I frown on "greedy" anglers who hi-grade their catch. There are proper ways of doing this and using barbed treble hooks is not one of them. Other than that we had a very enjoyable day.

You can " like" my facebook page and receive instant updates on all my trips. Just check out Captain Dave's Guide Service on FB.

Remember these big kokes will disappear late September as they head for their spawning grounds, so go and hit em while it's hot.

Thanks for the report. A great reminder to experiment with gear and speed. Sometimes the littlest of tweaks does the trick. Great looking fish.
