The dodger makes an anchor point and the hit from big fish just breaks the leader. I really found this to be true when fishing salmon with flashers and dodgers. The other thing is kokanee don't seem to be particularly leader shy. Hope that helps - Alan

The first one I tried Spider Wire EZ Fluoro was bad right on the spool. After I lost a fish that snapped the leader to the dodger I went to put on a new rig and tested the leader and it snapped. So we started spooling line right off the spool and testing and at random lengths I could find a rough spot and it would snap when tested. Tossed that stuff. Then I used some P-line which has always been good for me in the regular mono and had failures there also. Only had one fail that might have been at a knot. Mostly it just comes apart and is not a clean snap. Looks like an imperfection to me. Will give this new Trilene another chance but then may go with Alan's advice and move up a bit. I have some leaders that have been used quite often and caught several fish and they seem good to go and then others that seem to fail very quickly and they are from the same spool. This is what leads me to believe the problem is an imperfection in manufacturing.
The real solution will be to remember to check the leader every time I bait up.

1/15/2016 2:27:00 PMI use the maxima ultragreen mono leader for just about everything i fish for, just different pound test depending on the fish, of course, and have never snapped a leader... anybody else use this stuff too?

1/15/2016 2:29:00 PMP-line for the main line too, never had a problem with it.... but now that i read your post about i am curious and might look more closely at the line and see if there are any flaws...

Just wanted to be sure that you caught that I have no complaints with the regular P-Line mono just some concerns with the fluorocarbon stuff. It's hard to describe the way it separates, not a clean snap but an elongated fray so to speak. I wrap my rigs on those black rubber tubes with the green ends and am starting to wonder if the way I store them in the tackle box that I might be causing some abrasion on leaders from adjacent setups on other tubes. Just going to have to remember to give each leader a tug or two when I put it back in the water. Sometimes I get in a hurry to get that line back out and fishing, can't imagine why I get so excited.

Maybe it had been on the shelves for a while wherever you bought it and it is just simply old and now is a more fragile than when it was new? I would trash it because I would be chapped to be breaking line so often, especially if you snap it on heavy fish! But you said it right in your original post.... "But hey, it's all good, we had a great day on the water."

1/15/2016 5:12:00 PMSounds like you had a great day fishing with lots of action. Thanks for the report. I agree with tleeMV, Maxima Utragreen is hard to beat for abrasion resistance. I use it in 12# and 15# for kokanee and retie all leaders with it. The kokanee don't seem to be leader shy, and the heavier line seems to withstand fraying from their small teeth and results in less break offs.

1/16/2016 9:26:00 AMNot sure if this is the right place to post this but I have a question. Last winter was my first season fishing Roosevelt and for the most part I found the fish on my fish finder in small bays underneath what I assume was plankton showing on my display. When we marked fish, we caught RBT and 1 Kokanee throughout the winter. This winter I hardly ever mark a fish and seem to be catching them out in deeper water and have hooked more Kokanee than RBT. Not complaining, just wondering.

1) Tie tandem hooks with 50lb red PowerPro. Once you're done snelling the top hook, pull the leader back through the eye and cut it off. Use a little vinyl lure paint or head cement to lock down the snell knots on both hooks.
2) Use Seaguar Grand Max Fluorocarbon (01X) for leader material. It's 18LB fly tipet and as The General says, "Doesn't matter how big the fat man is if you can't see him!"
I tie all of my koke/trout rigs this way and seldom have failure issues. Even managed a 12LB laker and an 8LB chinook out of Chelan on back to back days on these rigs without failure.

much money on leaders - now I buy a spool (200-300yds) of good mono and use it for my leaders - just to be on the safe side I
check the line after each fish landing (lets face it, the walleye and trout in Roosevelt do have good teeth) and re-tie every spinner
used each day - the size of the mono depends on what fish I'm going after, however, if something new and better comes along,
it's always worth a try.

David has 2 sizes and they both seem to work really well. I think the Kokanee may hit the pink better in the summer. Right now orange seems to be the best for my boat no matter what lure you are using.

1/18/2016 9:44:00 AMI use Ande Flourocarbon leader and have never had a problem with it, General Store sells Ande premium main line not sure about leader as well i use Ande Tournament Green mail line. Ande is on ebay, cabelas,bass pro shops, etc.. I also like the maxima ultra green. If you can before you buy your line at a store pull some out and run it through (between) your fingers to feel for inconsistency's in the line, and as already mention before you pull your knot tight make sure it is lubricated. Good Luck
