1st salmon fishing of the year for me, headed out to Lincoln Park and wasted some time in the shallows when the tide was negative.

A fellow fisherman walked by and recommended that I head over to the area near Colman pool, he proudly displayed a good looking Pink salmon in his bucket.

I headed up to the pool and joined a well-spaced lineup. Not much action all around, nobody else seemed to be having any luck, yet we all seemed to be having a good time anyway. The weather was truly awesome.

After about an hour, a fish went airborne out in front of me, three casts later and I found my pink buzz-bomb hooked into a 8-10 pound WILD Coho jack!!!! A good fight ensued and this bright chrome wild fish was released to re-populate the species. My first salmon of the year, and even though I couldn't take him home - it was a great way to spend part of my afternoon.

My wife didn't believe me because my photo doesn't really display the size of this fish, mental note to put some sort of perspective in my photo next time.

Tight lines!

She is right, a Coho jack can't be weighing 8-10lbs! LOL. tell her it was a Coho adult, she will believe you. Congrats and nice work!

not to drag it to shore? i feel like it happens constantly since everyone thinks they're pinks and can't really identify the fish while half swimming in the tide with the fish running around...

aw man you're absolutely right. It's a buck not a jack - and sorry I was too excited when I was typing that up that I wasn't even thinking! And yes, it was impossible to figure out if it was wild or not because he was completely getting me soaking wet as I was trying to corral him in the water. guys this is what happens when you are way too excited and it's the 1st salmon of the year! Oddly enough others on the beach were asking me if I was going to "keep it", I was like NO WAY dude, this is a wild fish - besides there should be plenty of pinks on the way.

i beleive its ONLY unclipped kings that need to be released. also, an 8-10 lb coho from puget sound, is a huge one indeed.

Hey Doc! DANG I was about to kick myself so I had to check the fish regs - for Area 10 Chinook and Wild Cohos need to be released....otherwise oh what could have been. And guys, just to mention I am a terrible...I mean TERRIBLE estimator on fish size, the dude that helped me release this fish estimated that it was over 8 pounds...then again he asked me if i was going to keep it too.
