This is actually a report for The Big island of Hawaii. I was looking for Hawaii in the list of Out of Washington locations, but did not find it; So we will call Michigan "Hawaii". Well, I am back, not that I ever wanted to leave. The Big Island is an amazing place, with lots of sights scattered all over to see. I booked a trip with Hula Girl Sport Fishing and am really happy that I did. I am going to try and make it a habit to come back every year, even for just 3 days, so that I can go out for big game fish. We were targeting Blue/Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Spearfish and Mahi. Captain Stretch is a great captain and a nice guy to chat with. I got to the boat at 6 am on Sunday (17th). His deckhand Cole was there and ready to get on some fish. About 5 minutes out of the harbor, we threw out some diving rigs for Ono, about 20 minutes later, we pulled them up and threw out the surface gear. Only another 20 minutes and BAM, line starts ripping. I had never heard line spool so fast. Stretch got a quick look from up top, after she showed her side, that it was a big Short Nose Spearfish. After a couple of minutes, she got off and we kept trolling. We ended up hooking another Spearfish later in the morning, and I got him into the boat within 10 minutes or so. We kept at it, and had another really nice bite early lunch time, this time the fish jumped at first, but we could not for sure say what it was. We had some great conversation on the fly bridge, and enjoyed the sight of a humpback whale right off shore. I would highly recommend these guys for your next trip to Kona. Cole filleted the spearfish up when we got back, and I had about 5 lbs of beautiful steaks ready for the grill, back at the hotel. That night our family feasted on spearfish, making fish tacos, and drinking ice cold beers! Awesome trip! Can't wait for our next venture over there!

Went to Kona in October...love it there. I fished 1/2 day but it was off season..nothing. Where did you stay while you were there? Congrats!

Thanks!

Ya, I guess November-February isn't a great time to catch big bill fish down there, but there was some nice warm water and bait still around, so that was what was keeping the Marlin and other predators around. Kona is great, definitely will be back; I am going to try and get some friends into the idea of doing a big tournament in either April or August! We stayed at the Marriott in Waikoloa.
