Give it a try next time you are on the lake. My fishing partner and I utilize a setback of at least 50 "yards" and most of the time its 60 to 70 "yards". That setback lately has worked very well for us. Just my two cents worth.

1/29/2019 6:09:47 AMI have a similar set up Sharphooks. You always have friends when you have a boat and they want to go out. I'm sure you know how it is. Plus I enjoy my friends. Wouldn't have them otherwise. So I need my boat. I do a lot of large lake and saltwater also, so I need the boat for those things. And it's also nice to sit in a boat with the canvas up and a heater plus that hot cup of coffee in the winter on the river. So a kayak doesn't work for me. I know the wire can sing a little at times. I have that mostly fixed now. We had plenty of fish bite on Saturday. Mainly I had a new guy out on the boat. Never did much fishing in his life, so I let him have at every strike. He has watched too many Babe Winkleman shows I think. Try to get him to get his pole up and he just can't do it. No need to set the hook out of the downrigger either. Those hooks are sharp already. He'll learn. As they say the oxen is slow, but the earth is patient. I am going to lengthen up the line when out next time. Have you tried any of those synthetic baits on your lure? I'm just wondering how they work compared to a small piece of worm? Sounds like you are out all the time? I got one of those day jobs, so I'm stuck with the weekend warrior stuff and short fish trips after work. Well that is until it warms up and the walleye start going nuts over east, up north and back in Montana. Actually I think they are doing okay over at Roosevelt jigging for walleye right now. Tasty! Go get those fish!

1/28/2019 5:07:47 PMHey Sharphooks. Well as they say "A boat is the biggest hole in the water." But the pay off is often well worth it I find. So your fishing that far behind the boat? I'm always a little worried being that far behind. Don't want my line run over. I'll give that a whirl next time I'm out though. Can't hurt. I know those cutthroat are often a little touchy about coming close to the boat.

I've learned from several authorities that fish tend to shy away from boats and surrounding areas when they encounter such noise. That's why I've become a user of the long setbacks from the boat. For me and my fishing partner, we know they are more effective than shorter setbacks as you seem to use. On the other hand, if your craft is of the more silent un-motorized type type such as a kayak, you may well be able to utilize with effectiveness a much shorter setback from the boat.
