Squid fishing has been lousy this year. I have been squidding from the Des Moines pier several times this year, and only caught enough for one small family calamari fry. I usually squid from the Redondo pier, but it's closed due to structural issues. I decided I was tired of waiting for the squid to come to me and launched my boat from Redondo at about 9:30 pm to go find the squid. (first time in the sound after dark) I idled around for a while with a few lights pointing down into the water while watching the sonar and used the anchor function of my electric trolling motor to stop if I found anything that looked like squid.

I stopped in several spots that looked like squid on the finder, 50-100 fow, and caught a few squid just off of the bottom. After an hour or two I decided this was too slow and idled the big motor around for a while looking for a larger school.

A little tip...... If youre looking to catch some squid in the sound from a boat, dont stop looking until you think something must be wrong with your fish finder. When I finally found what I was looking for, in 90 fow, the sonar screen was a solid massive mark from 10 feet deep all the way to the bottom! It was constant action as long as I could stay on the school! Eventually I remembered I had a 60w led submersible light in the boat and dropped that 20 feet deep over the side and jumpered it to the battery. After that the squid stayed right there with the boat! This was the first time I have squidded from a boat and the first time that damn submersible light has ever done anything for me. It was hoot!

Later on, a buddy met me at the ramp at about midnight, we motored around again and sure enough found another school, threw the light in the water and we both went home with limits. Cant wait to do it again!

how'd you do? was watching the wind wave forecast (1-2ft) and thinking of you. How was the chop? Thinking of trying again this weekend, but shows same choppy forecast at that location.
