First time at Baker lake. Been wanting to get there for a few years now, glad I finally did and will definitely be going back. I would have given this 5 stars for the setting, the weather, friendly people, and just a beautiful day on the lake. The fishing itself was slow, so I compromised with 4.

I forgot my fish finder, so I just had to go where the boats were. That ended up being about a 2 mile paddle from my campsite in my kayak. I believe it was around Noisy Creek. After asking around about depth (anywhere from 30 to 50 feet) I set my down-rigger to just over 40’. With in 30 minutes I hooked and landed my first Sockeye ever. Naturally I figured it wouldn’t take me long to limit out.

For the next 4 hours I tried every dodger I had at different depths and different leader lengths with nothing. Knowing it was a morning bite, I decided to call it at around 10:30. As I started the 2 mile paddle back to my camp, I decided to set the down-rigger to 35’ and leave the gear in as long as possible. So I break out lunch while enjoying the view and slowly paddling across the lake. About halfway across the lake (and halfway through a really good Honey Crisp apple) I am completely taken by surprise when my rod starts bouncing. I reluctantly toss the apple, land my second sockeye, put away gear, rinse the apple and finish it on my way back to camp.

FYI: first fish caught on 8” 50/50 dodger with 8” leader. 2nd on 6” silver “fish scale” dodger with 10” leader. Terminal tackle was pink squid, double red 1/0 hooks, few strands of flash, tipped with coon shrimp. I had tied a bunch of these in different leader lengths last year for a Baker lake trip that never happened. A lot of people were using a 8” silver “fish scale” dodger, but I don’t have one. I will make sure I get one for next time.

Sorry I forgot to take pictures.
