I camped at La Wis Wis and drove up to Dog Lake hoping to throw spinners for brookies, but the wind was blowing the spinners right back at me so I decided to stick to fishing off the bottom and catch whatever would bite. 16 inches off the bottom, half an ounce of lead so I could cast out far enough given the wind, and two chartreuse garlic scented power eggs. First fish came in the first five minutes, but swam itself into a snag that was just too far out of reach. Since it was caught with bait, I counted it towards my limit. I didn’t land it, and I’m pretty sure I saw it shake loose from the hook, but I ended up breaking off and didn’t know for sure so rather safe than sorry. After that it was about half an hour or 45 minutes between fish. All of them had this vivid coloration before they were bonked and bled. I noticed too that their stomachs were full of gravel, and not little bits from caddis fly casings, pea gravel sized and jagged. I wonder if that was for ballast. They ended up as dinner that night, with zucchini and parm and rosemary garlic parm potatoes.
