My buddy Mike and I hit the Arm on a smoky Saturday morning. We fished up and down the Arm and finally found some eyes on a couple of flats in Porcupine Bay. When jigging didn't produce, we started trolling. 30 to 40 FOW was the zone and you better not use more than a 2ft leader. Both a blue smile blade and a orangeish Colorado blade were most productive. Total for the day was 35 or so eyes and 6 smallies.

Just curious about your 2ft leader comment. What is the significance of using a leader of 2ft or shorter?

What you have there is a Trophy Miniature Walleye. Well done.

Nice way to slug it out in the smoke and put some in the cooler.

FISHINLEGEND - I was running about a 4ft leader on my smile blade and my buddy was using a 2ft leader; we were using the same colors. He was getting hits pretty consistently while I was getting zip. Once I changed to a shorter leader it was game-on. The eyes were holding tight to the bottom and wouldn't hit anything unless it was close to the bottom bouncer. Doesn't make much sense but it worked.

That little wally gave a heck of a fight. When Mike saw it he said we're gonna need a bigger boat!

A shorter leader changes the movement of the spinner rig. You see this in Kokanee fishing with people going from 2 ft to 8 inch leaders during certain times of the year.

Way to go after the big ones! Finally getting a chance to get out and am headed to Ft Spokane next Monday for a few days. Changed boats so will be busy adjusting to this one. See you up there one of these trips.

Tiredmark the water level is dropping a little bit every day. I would suggest trying to find some weedbeds or even a mudline. I was out today and it was pretty slow. Most of our fish came out of 30 to 40ft. We were trolling the main river channel above and below buoy 5. Lots of smalleyes and baby smallies. A purple smile blades produced best.
