Took the kayak to Lake Washington for perch and thought I would try launching at Clarke Beach instead of Coulon where I usually put in. Turns out the trail is way too steep and there's no beach to launch there! Then I went to the boat ramp under the I-90 bridge- no luck there either. Construction was blocking most of the parking spots and they wanted to make me pay to launch a kayak, so I went to Fruitland Landing. I went south and fished where the perch are known to be around the Seahawks practice facility and there were only dinks around. After talking to some bass anglers I met, I went back to right off where I launched around Luther Burbank Park and found the perch to be at 100 feet, with some of respectable size and the largest being 11 inches. Initially I was using just worms on a drop shot rig, but once I caught a few fish, I switched to something a bit different. While I was crappie fishing earlier this year, I could not keep the perch off of the standard black and chartreuse crappie tubes, so I decided to try these on a drop shot rig tipped with perch strips, and this proved to be by far the most effective setup. Fish were hitting it as soon as it got to the bottom, and they tended to be bigger than those caught on bait only. Colors used were black and chartreuse and white and chartreuse, both of which worked well. I will certainly be doing this again.
