I had to drop off a part for a customer in downtown at the end of my shift. I got a wild hair to go hit the Spokane River from shore near the military cemetery (Little Cove). I only had my spinning rod, tackle, and flies so I rigged up an adjust-a-bubble water bobber and a fly with some a couple split shot. Well the I got caught up and snapped the line so no more weights with me, only brought those, my flies, and a pair of pliers from the rig. I got some bumps but nothing taking the fly. I proceeding to fish the bank from Little Cove up stream, then had to climb up to the path so as to not trespass through the Air Force "installation" which I think are wells for the irrigation system at the cemetery. Then dropped back down and fished the bank a little more. Would get a bump here and there, or else I was hitting rocks, I dunno. So I went back down to Little Cove as that was the only place I saw fishing topping. Over the course of my excursion I had changed to various flies. So then I changed to a grizzly hackle peacock and BAM! Got one! I'd never seen this type of fish before. I couldnt tell if it was a Mountain Whitefish, a Northern Pikeminnow, or a peamouth. The mouth wasnt wide or flat enough for a pikeminnow, but also not round enough for a peamouth. So I took a picture and soon as I got the hook out if went ahead and released itself back into the water with a couple could flips. It put up a decent fight reeling it in. I made a few more casts and BAM, another one! Same type, a lil different in pattern. Released it. And then got another one and released it. All about 8-9 inches. So in asking in a facebook group I learned it was called a Chiselmouth. I'd never caught one before though my fishing history has been mostly lakes and the Pend Oreille River.
