Didn't have to work Wednesday so Scott & I loaded up the boat for a days fishing. I have fished Black lake before with o.k. results, nothing too outstanding. However after hearing some of the locals recent fish stories about 6 to 9 pound rainbows taken back to back on two casts we thought we'd give it a good days try. The day started out real slow, for us and everyone else on the lake. after three hours of nothing & seeing only one small fish caught on the whole lake I asked the guy what he thought might work.
he suggested using one large bass worm trolled fast with nothing else on the line. I've fished quite avidly for trout some fifteen years now & have never tried that so I figured "what the hey?" I rigged up the largest mud brown/green bass worm I had & put the trolling motor on its highest speed & took off down the lake 30 feet parallel to the shore. after travelling about 300 yards & thinking about how stupid this tactic is for winter trout it felt like I'd snagged a log & line smoked from my reel. As soon as I noticed my line taking off to the left as soon as I'd killed the motor I realized "fish-on!".
She put up a pretty good fight & was an amazing fish to look at. 23" and bigger around than a football. I have never caught a trout that fat to its length before. I am almost 100% catch&release but I decided to keep er'. I wish I hadn't. Tasted awful. I mean really awful! I checked its stomach to find what it was feeding on & it was full of rocks, dirt, & a few branches bigger than Popsicle sticks. No normal food items in there at all. it should have been a sign. So now you know there's bigguns in there but don't eat em. let em go. On that note I have heard of 11 pound plus trout taken out of there in the past few months. good luck!
