Lake was windy and cold with gust making it difficult for all
angling. No top water action was coming off until late on the 2nd when winds died down. After using every fly in my box, I switched to a Elk Hair Caddis #16, and a dropper of same, in the nymph pattern trailed by 18 inches of leader and things really heated up. I caught 3 nice rainbows over 14 inches, and several cuts, between 10-12 inches. (For those wondering what a dropper is, it is a nymph or wet fly pattern tied to the shank of a dryfly pattern).
Although the wind made things very difficult, it was a good trip overall. Water temp is 53 degrees.
CAMPING DOWNSIDE!!!!!!!
Walupt lake campground is a decent place to camp accept for one very large drawback. The restroom facilities are so smelly it wafts through the campground with relentless frequency. Funny how a Pine Tree air freshner like the ones you put in your car was used by the Park Service. Best to camp at the Horse Camp to get away from the stench. At far end of lake is a stream with many cuts. Watch for wind and high waves if in small water craft. Hug bank to be safe. Hikers! Bear sign and Cougar tracks all over the place. Park Ranger said cougar walked through camp in broad daylight last week.
