What a difference 5 days and a cold front can make!! Ventured back out to Amber hoping for another day like one I had last week. Had my stepson, Jonny, with me. He'd never caught a trout before using flies. Weather was partly cloudy and 35-40 degrees with a light, sustained wind. Water temp was 37 degrees. Started Jonny out with a size 12 bloodworm, which we fished unsuccessfully for an hour. It was slow for other fisherman also, with only an occasional fish caught. Went smaller, switched Jonny to a size 18 red beadhead midge, and put my line in also. As luck would have it, while 8-year Jonny was daydreaming and undoubtedly thinking of a warmer setting, a fish took. Neither of us saw the indicator go down and it wasn't until he nearly lost his rod til we realized a fish was on!! A couple minutes later we netted his first fish. Jonny hung 2 more in the next hour or so, both of which were lost and I managed only one. The bitter wind then drove us off the lake. We'll be back, though, when the weather and bite is better and Jonny can gain a better appreciation of the benefits of fly fishing!!
