The 30 minute hike into ancient lakes area was a beautiful mid-day hike. The Sun was shining and the early spring grass was green. Hiking down the basalt cliffs into the "waterfall lake" was a bit rough (hiking out was even worse), but getting into the somewhat remote area was well worth it. I stared out flipping rapalas , perch and rainbow, working the banks around the waterfall lake with no luck. so I hiked to the southern one just over the hump. Its a small circular depression lake with high basalt cliffs on the SE end of the lake. Fish were jumping all around the NW end just a few feet from the bank. It only took six casts with a black rooster tail to nab a nice 15 in. Rainbow. I can't say it got any better though, after about 3 hours of fishing with only three bites, no more fish, and a pack of coyotes yelping nearby it was time to head back.
