Arrived at the lake about 11 a.m. , partly cloudy, 72 degrees and a slight breeze. I immediately started catching fish on a olive colored leech. About 2 p.m. I decided to explore the shallow south end of the lake since there were many damsel flies in the air. While cruising the shoreline, I noticed that the fish were taking the damsels while hovering over the water. I saw one fish rolling right next to the shore line in about 2' of water. Seeing that I tied on a blue damsel dry fly and casted to his next rise. The somewhat subtle take quickly turned into a violent thrashing about in the water. This lasted about 15 sec. more and the line went dead. With one quick jerk, that rainbow snapped my 3x/8.2lb leader above the tippet. The leader was a clean break as if I had cut it with the nipper. My second fish on lasted a bit longer until he decided to end it also. The third take was a smaller fish and I was successful in landing it. It was 17" long and weighed 2.5 lbs.
Many people believe that you have to go deep to get the big ones. Well maybe sometimes. Those I tangled with today were in about 1-2' of water.
